End of Tenancy Cleaning: The Full Checklist

Losing your deposit over cleaning? It's more common than you think. This checklist covers everything landlords and inventory clerks look for.

What Landlords Actually Check

End-of-tenancy inspections are more rigorous than most tenants expect. Inventory clerks are trained to spot issues that aren't obvious to an untrained eye — and their reports carry significant weight in deposit disputes.

Room-by-Room Checklist

Kitchen

Oven, grill, and hob — degreased inside and out

Extractor fan filter cleaned or replaced

Fridge and freezer defrosted, wiped, and deodorised

Cupboard interiors wiped down

Limescale removed from sink and taps

Bathrooms

Grout cleaned and mould-free

Limescale removed from shower screen, tiles, and taps

Toilet cleaned inside the pan and around the base

Extractor fan grille wiped

Living Areas & Bedrooms

Carpets professionally cleaned (not just vacuumed)

Upholstery spot-cleaned or professionally cleaned

Skirting boards, door frames, and light switches wiped

Windows cleaned inside; sills and tracks vacuumed

Marks removed from walls where possible

General

All bins emptied and cleaned

Garden left tidy (where applicable)

All personal items removed from loft, shed, garage

The Carpet Question

Most tenancy agreements require carpets to be returned in a professionally cleaned condition. A receipt from a professional cleaner is the best evidence you can provide to dispute any deductions.
